Congratulations to our 2016/17 Craig Kelman & Associates Scholarship Award Winners!

As there was a tie for this single $500 scholarship, ACWWA has also contributed $500 to allow for each winner to receive a full $500!

Kate Barnes (PE)

Kate Barnes is currently enrolled in the second year of study at Holland College in the Environmental Applied Science Technology (EAST) Program. During her school, she had the opportunity to go out into the field, where she monitored, assessed, and studied the biodiversity of various water bodies in the Halifax region. She also had the chance to tour the different local water processing plants, after which she decided to pursue her interest in water quality and enhance her lab and field skills by attending the EAST program. She is a motivated, intuitive, enthusiastic young person, eager to make a difference. At the college she served as the Student Union’s Communications and Marketing Coordinator and now the Vice President of the Prince of Wales Campus. She also volunteer for the Holland College Green Machine, which is a group of staff and students raising awareness about environmental sustainability on and around campus.

Caroline Stratford (NS)

Caroline Stratfordv2

Caroline Stratford is currently enrolled in the Environmental Engineering Technology program at the Nova Scotia Community College. She was born and raised in Québec, and joined the Canadian Armed Forces when she was 17 years old through the Regular Officer Training Program. She obtained her bachelor in mechanical engineering with first class honours in 1998 from the Royal Military College in Kingston, ON. She served 11 years in the Canadian Navy, stationed on the east coast, where she served on HMCS Montréal and also taught at the Naval Engineering School. When her daughters started school, she returned to work at Sainte-Anne University at their Halifax campus as the Adult Learning Program tutor. At this point in her life, she realized she wanted to have her occupation align with her values, namely sustainability and stewardship. She hope that through her current program, she will become proactive in a field that is dedicated to the management, protection, development, and use of fresh water resources.
